What are 16 mm dry ice nuggets used for?

16 mm nuggets are thumb-size pieces of dry ice. They are bigger than blasting pellets, so they sublimate more slowly, and they are easy to weigh out by the pound. People use them in coolers on camping and fishing trips, in insulated boxes for frozen food or lab samples, to save a freezer in a power outage, and in hot water for low fog.

How much 16 mm dry ice do I need?

Start from how long it has to last. A good cooler with the lid on but not latched uses 5 to 10 lb a day. A full freezer needs about 1.5 lb per cubic foot to stay frozen for a day. A shipping box takes about 5 lb per day in transit, plus a day of margin. Fog runs through 2 to 3 lb every 10 minutes per bucket of hot water.

  • Cooler, lid loose: 5 to 10 lb per 24 hours
  • Freezer outage: 1.5 lb per cubic foot for about a day (20 to 25 lb for a 15 cu ft chest freezer)
  • Shipping perishables: about 5 lb per box per 24 hours, plus a day of margin
  • Fog: 2 to 3 lb per 10 minutes, per bucket of hot water

Questions about 16 mm nuggets

How long do 16 mm dry ice nuggets last in a cooler?

In a decent insulated cooler with the lid on but not latched, expect to lose 5 to 10 lb every 24 hours. Fill the empty space with crumpled newspaper or towels and keep the cooler in the shade to land at the low end. Opening it often and warm weather push it to the high end, so buy close to when you need it.

Can I keep dry ice in a sealed container or my freezer?

No. Keep it in an insulated container that can vent, such as a cooler with the lid resting on top. A sealed container can burst as the gas builds up, and a home freezer is the wrong place for it. Keep it somewhere with air moving, away from children and pets, and handle it with gloves.
